I'm sure there's some fancy psychology term to describe this phenomenon, but I'll just refer to it as the "Competition Effect."
You can actually use this Competition Effect to grow your practice!
Since, most of us practice alone, it's more difficult to feel a sense of competition. Years ago, one of our founders (Nevin) gave me an incredibly valuable lesson in keeping track of my practice's performance, which allowed me to create my own "Competition Effect."
I used these calculations to create a competition effect - I was now competing against my own numbers. Each month (for 6-months), I re-ran the calculations and couldn't believe the difference it made. Now, I run them
every 6-months just to make sure my practice performance is where I want it to be.
So, I thought I'd share this great lesson with you.
